Colorectal Surgery

The department delivers expert care for colorectal diseases, utilizing advanced laparoscopic and robotic surgical methods. More than 95% of primary colon and rectal cancer surgeries are performed using robotic-assisted techniques. We boast one of the highest volumes of robotic surgeries among university hospitals in Tokyo. Our surgeons are dedicated to improving patient recovery times and quality of life through innovative, minimally invasive procedures.

We are also actively developing function-preserving surgeries for locally advanced rectal cancer by integrating multidisciplinary therapy and minimally invasive techniques. In cases requiring extensive resection involving surrounding organs such as the bladder or prostate, we aim to avoid permanent colostomies by using preoperative chemoradiotherapy to downstage tumors.

Successful curative resection after preoperative chemotherapy for rectal cancer invading the sacrum.

Even in pelvic exenteration requiring rectal resection, we make every possible effort to preserve urinary function and avoid postoperative voiding dysfunction at one year after surgery. Urostomy is generally avoided; furthermore, a permanent stoma can also be prevented in many cases. We have reported clinical outcomes of such organ-preserving surgeries and continue to refine robotic-assisted procedures that enhance precision and minimize blood loss.

Our goal is to establish curative and function-preserving surgical treatment for advanced rectal cancer that maintains patient quality of life.
