Department of Gastrointestinal and Pediatric Surgery
Tokyo Medical University

The Department of Surgery at Tokyo Medical University has a proud history of more than 100 years. Our department was established in 1956 during a reorganization of the surgical departments. We take great pride in being part of this distinguished department, built upon the dedication of generations of surgeons.
Our division is structured into four specialized groups: Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery, Hepatobiliary-Pancreatic Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, and Pediatric Surgery. Each group is led by expert surgeons who are dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education.
Our department is actively engaged in minimally invasive treatments, including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery, and was among the first in Japan to adopt robotic surgery. Today, we lead the nation in the number of robotic surgeries for pancreatic diseases and perform a high volume of robotic-assisted surgeries for esophageal and colorectal cancers. In addition, in the pediatric field, we play a leading role in robotic surgery for congenital biliary dilatation.
Guided by the philosophy of “never giving up on treatment,” we actively pursue the latest multidisciplinary therapies and surgical approaches for advanced cancers. We also serve as a last line of defense for patients deemed unresectable at other institutions, exploring every possible treatment option.
At the same time, we are committed to advancing surgical innovation and to fostering the development of young surgeons. To study the advanced surgical treatments we have developed and implemented, many fellows and observers visit our department not only from across Japan but also from overseas, making our department a hub for education and training.
Looking ahead, we will continue to provide the highest standards of medical care to our patients and contribute to the advancement of surgery worldwide through research and education.
